Manchester United 3-2 Burnley

A dramatic late penalty from Bruno Fernandes rescued Manchester United in a thrilling 3-2 victory over Burnley at Old Trafford.

United, under pressure after a poor start to the season and an embarrassing Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby Town, were gifted the lead before half-time when Josh Cullen put the ball into his own net. Burnley fought back bravely, scoring twice and silencing the home crowd.

However, deep into stoppage time, Amad Diallo was pulled down by Jaidon Anthony, handing United a lifeline. Skipper Bruno Fernandes made no mistake from the spot, sparking wild celebrations and giving Ruben Amorim his first Premier League win as United boss.

Speaking to The Guardian, Amorim defended his side:

“Even when Amad is missing chances, I love his effort. The team showed great commitment and I think we deserved to win. We created enough to have a bigger advantage by half-time, but in the end, we got what we deserved.”

United move off the bottom with their first three points, though questions remain over Amorim’s decision to bench their star-signing Benjamin Sesko.

Sunderland 2-1 Brentford

Sunderland continued their impressive start under Regis Le Bris, claiming a second win in three games to silence talk of a relegation battle.

The Black Cats came from behind after Igor Thiago’s header gave Brentford a 1-0 lead in the 77th minute. Earlier, Brentford had the chance to double their advantage from the penalty spot, but Sunderland keeper Roefs pulled off a crucial save.

Momentum shifted when Rico Henry fouled Diarra in the box, allowing Enzo Le Fée to convert Sunderland’s equaliser in the 82nd minute. Deep into stoppage time, substitute Wilson Isidor powered home a header from Granit Xhaka’s cross to complete a dramatic turnaround at the Stadium of Light.

The victory lifts Sunderland further up the Premier League table, as their fearless approach continues to catch attention.

Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Bournemouth

The biggest upset of the day came in North London as Bournemouth stunned Tottenham Hotspur with a 1-0 victory.

Evanilson’s early strike in the 7th minute proved decisive as Andoni Iraola’s side soaked up pressure and struck clinically on the counter. Spurs, who had won their opening two fixtures under Thomas Frank, dominated possession but failed to create enough meaningful chances.

Frank admitted frustration post-match:

“Bournemouth played to their strengths and we didn’t handle it well enough. It wasn’t a good performance, and our supporters expect better.”

The result leaves Spurs fans restless, with new signing Xavi Simons tipped for a starting role after the international break.

Wolves 2-3 Everton

Everton’s European qualification hopes gathered momentum as David Moyes’ men edged Wolves 3-2 in a thriller at Molineux.

The Toffees were inspired once again by Jack Grealish, who continues to shine since arriving from Manchester City. His pinpoint cross set up Beto for the opener before Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, another summer signing, teed up Iliman Ndiaye to make it 2-1.

In the second half, Dewsbury-Hall himself scored a stunning left-foot strike into the top corner, sealing all three points despite Wolves pulling two goals back through Hwang Hee-chan and Rodrigo Gomes.

With Grealish providing assists in every game so far, Moyes’ side are looking like serious contenders for a top-six finish in the Premier League 2025/26 season.

Leeds United 0-0 Newcastle United

The final game of the day produced no goals as Leeds United and Newcastle United played out a frustrating stalemate at Elland Road.

Despite dominating possession and registering more shots, Eddie Howe’s side once again failed to find the breakthrough. This was Newcastle’s second goalless draw of the campaign following their 0-0 opener against Aston Villa, leaving them winless and pointless heading into the international break.

Leeds, meanwhile, will be satisfied with a point against a European-level opponent, but both sides will rue missed opportunities in front of goal.

Saturday Recap

  • Manchester United snatched victory in dramatic fashion against Burnley.
  • Sunderland proved they are more than just relegation survivors.
  • Bournemouth pulled off the upset of the day against Spurs.
  • Everton keep pushing their European dreams thanks to Jack Grealish.
  • Leeds vs Newcastle ended in a stalemate.

With Chelsea also registering a routine win earlier in the day, the Premier League table is already taking shape as teams head into the international break.
