Portuguese midfielder João Palhinha is set for a Premier League return as he prepares to join Tottenham Hotspur on loan from Bayern Munich for the 2025/26 season. The deal includes a €30 million buy option clause, which is not mandatory, offering Spurs flexibility in the long-term.
The 30-year-old returns to England after spending a season with Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich. He will now look to strengthen Spurs’ midfield under newly appointed manager Thomas Frank, formerly of Brentford.
Palhinha initially made his Premier League debut with Fulham in 2022, quickly earning a reputation as one of the most reliable defensive midfielders in the league. In his two-season spell at Craven Cottage, he made 79 appearances and scored 8 goals, becoming a fan favorite for his aggression, tactical discipline, and work rate.
On the international stage, Palhinha has been a regular for the Portugal national team, earning 34 caps to date. His physical presence, aerial ability, and passing range make him a key asset in midfield.
Before his move to Fulham, Palhinha’s senior career spanned several Portuguese clubs:
- Sporting CP B (2013–2015, 2016–2018)
- Moreirense (2015–16, loan)
- Belenenses SAD (2016–17, loan)
- Sporting CP (2016–2018, 2020–2022)
- FC Braga (2018–2020, loan)
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the move on X (formerly Twitter), stating:
“João Palhinha to Tottenham, here we go! Final green light arrived from Bayern. Exclusive detail: loan deal includes €30m buy option clause for #THFC, not mandatory. Salary covered by Spurs. Bayern said yes and Palhinha will now travel for medical tests.”
Palhinha is expected to complete his medical in the coming days and could be in contention for Spurs’ opening Premier League fixture. His arrival adds much-needed steel and experience to a Tottenham midfield looking to rebuild under a fresh managerial vision.
