The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially announced the Indian squad for the Asia Cup 2025, which will be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This marks the beginning of a new era in Indian cricket following the retirement of legends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

Dynamic middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav has been appointed as the new captain, while opener Shubman Gill will serve as the vice-captain for the marquee continental event.

Shubman Gill Rewarded with Vice-Captaincy

Gill’s elevation as deputy skipper comes after his remarkable performances during the England tour, where his consistency at the top order cemented his place as one of India’s most reliable batters across formats.

The leadership duo of Suryakumar and Gill signals a clear shift towards India’s next generation of leaders as the team builds towards the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.

Suryakumar Yadav on Leading Team India

In an interview with ESPNcricinfo, skipper Suryakumar Yadav expressed excitement about the opportunity and outlined his vision for the team:

“This is the first big tournament we are playing since the 2024 T20 World Cup. We have played three-four bilateral series. It’s a good tournament to test ourselves. After this, there are close to 20–22 T20Is before we play our first game in the 2026 World Cup, so I think the journey starts from the Asia Cup.”

India’s Roadmap and First Fixture

The Asia Cup 2025 will be the first major assignment for this new-look Indian side. With a packed calendar of T20 internationals leading up to the next World Cup, the tournament serves as a crucial platform for assessing team combinations and emerging talent.

India will begin their campaign on September 10 against hosts UAE in a Group A Pool match, a fixture expected to draw huge attention as the post-Kohli-Rohit era gets underway.
