World No. 4 Taylor Fritz, No. 7 Ben Shelton, and No. 11 Andrey Rublev have all secured their spots in the quarter-finals of the 2025 National Bank Open presented by Rogers.
Fritz battled past Czech star Jiri Lehecka in a dramatic three-set thriller: 6(4)-7(7), 7(7)-6(5), 7(7)-6(5). Despite trailing in break points, first serve percentage, and committing more unforced errors, the American’s superior ace count and tie-break performance gave him the edge. He now sets up a high-voltage clash with Russia’s Andrey Rublev in the last eight.
Rublev also had to dig deep after dropping the opening set to Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The Russian responded with an emphatic turnaround, clinching the match 6(3)-7(7), 7(7)-6(2), 3-0 (ret.). Rublev dominated the final two sets with stronger service games, more break points converted, and higher receiving points.
Meanwhile, 22-year-old Ben Shelton continues to impress on Canadian hard courts. The American edged past Italy’s Flavio Cobolli in a topsy-turvy encounter: 4-6, 6-4, 7(7)-6(1). After dropping the second set, Shelton rebounded with power and precision in the decider. He will now face Australian Alex de Minaur in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.
With three top-15 players advancing, the National Bank Open’s final stages promise world-class tennis and fierce battles for a spot in the semi-finals.
