Two-time Formula 1 World Champion Fernando Alonso will miss Free Practice 1 (FP1) at the Hungarian Grand Prix due to a muscular injury in his back, as confirmed by Aston Martin Aramco F1 Team. In his absence, reserve driver Felipe Drugovich will step in and join Lance Stroll for the opening session at the Hungaroring.
According to a statement released by F1.com on behalf of the team:
“In the days following the Belgian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso has been managing a muscular injury in his back,” read the official update.
“As he continues with treatment this morning, he has chosen to sit out of FP1. Felipe Drugovich will drive in FP1 alongside Lance Stroll.
“A decision will then be made on Fernando’s participation in FP2 and the remainder of the weekend in due course.”
Felipe Drugovich Steps In for Aston Martin
Felipe Drugovich, the 2022 Formula 2 Champion, will get a valuable opportunity behind the wheel of the AMR25 in a full Grand Prix weekend session. The Brazilian has been part of Aston Martin’s development programme and is widely regarded as one of the most promising young talents on the grid.
While Alonso’s absence from FP1 is precautionary, Aston Martin is yet to confirm whether he will return for FP2 or miss additional sessions. The team and fans alike will be monitoring the situation closely, especially with the tight competition in the Constructors’ Championship heading into the latter half of the season.

FP1 for the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix is scheduled to begin at 13:30 local time (CEST). Drugovich will be aiming to collect vital data for the team while Alonso focuses on recovery ahead of the critical sessions later in the weekend.
