Ben Shelton wins his first major title in his career after thrashing Karen Khachanov in the final of the National Bank Open presented by Rogers, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 7-6 (3). The ATP-ranked world number 7 also becomes the youngest American to win a Masters 1000 title after Andy Roddick (then 21) won Miami in 2004.

The Russian gave a competitive edge to Shelton in this final by winning the first set 7(7) – 6(5). However, Ben had broken the lead from 5-3 down and gained the lead until the last set point. Khachanov won the last three points in the tie-breaker and snatched the first set from the American.

In the second set, both of them were battling neck-to-neck as they were 4-4 at one point. Shelton earned the latter 2 points despite being 40-15 down in one and winning on advantage on the other.

The final set of the game held the nerves of the audience, as both finalists brought the game down to the wire at 6-6, but Shelton again proved his mettle and clinched his first ATP Masters 1000 title in Toronto.

According to Tennis.com Ben Shelton gave his view on the match performance, “It hasn’t really sunk in yet. I’m sure it will in the next couple days,” Shelton said. “I’m just happy with my performance today, my level. Karen played a ridiculously good match, and I struggled for so much of the match to deal with the stuff that he was throwing at me.

“To fight from a set down and win this match to win the tournament is pretty special for me and my team. We’ve been working really hard every day, day in day out, to be competing for big titles like this.”

The American wins his third major title after appearing in 5 finals of the Masters tournament in his career.
