England Women have reclaimed their status as Europe’s finest, winning the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 title after a dramatic 3-1 penalty shootout victory over reigning world champions Spain in Basel. The win marks back-to-back European titles for the Lionesses, having also lifted the trophy in 2022, and delivers a third consecutive European triumph for manager Sarina Wiegman—a remarkable achievement in women’s football.

Spain started the final brightly, taking a deserved lead through Mariona Caldentey’s well-placed header in the first half at St. Jakob-Park. However, England grew into the game and equalised in the 57th minute, thanks to a clinical finish from Alessia Russo, who latched onto a through ball and fired confidently past the Spanish keeper.

With both sides unable to break the deadlock in the remainder of normal time and through extra time, the contest was decided by penalties—setting the stage for high drama under the Basel floodlights.

Although Beth Mead missed England’s first spot-kick and Patricia Guijarro scored Spain’s opener, the Lionesses held their nerve. Alex Greenwood, Niamh Charles, and Chloe Kelly all converted their penalties with conviction. Kelly, who famously scored the winning goal in the 2022 final, once again delivered in a pressure moment—slotting home England’s decisive penalty to seal the title.

Spain, meanwhile, faltered from the spot. Caldentey, Aitana Bonmatí, and Salma Paralluelo all failed to convert, dashing Spanish hopes of completing the World Cup–Euro double.

This historic win further cements England’s dominance in European women’s football and adds another glittering chapter to Sarina Wiegman’s legacy as one of the game’s most successful managers.
